Daniel Kirk's "Library Mouse" -- Genre and "Seeing Yourself as a Writer" Lesson Plan
If I have learned anything in my years of teaching writing, it’s this: CONFIDENCE plays a HUGE role in developing as a writer. Especially as a young writer. I teach this lesson to help my students BUILD CONFIDENCE in their writing. While this Lesson Plan also teaches ‘GENRE’, it, most importantly, focuses on ways to “SEE YOURSELF AS A WRITER”. This is vitally important for student writing growth and development. The more your students ‘see themselves as writers’, and the more you refer to them as writers--the more CONFIDENT they will grow in their writing. This is especially important for reluctant writers.
In this Fearless Dragon Writers, LLC Lesson Plan (created by writer and writing teacher Andrea Felcone), you will find a FULLY SCRIPTED lesson plan to teach a FUN writing lesson based on Daniel Kirk’s brilliant picture book, “Library Mouse”. If you are familiar with this book—which inspired a series of “Library Mouse” books, then you know that “Sam the Library Mouse” wants the students in the library to “see themselves as writers” and he does this, in part, by using a mirror. This Lesson Plan mirrors (see what I did there!) what 'Sam the mouse' does, and helps you use mirrors to teach students about growing their writing confidence. At the heart of this lesson is my Original Writing Worksheet and through using the Writing Worksheet and actual mini handheld mirrors, your students will be able to explore and think about what it is like to see themselves as writers!
This lesson plan contains—20 pages of tested content—including Teaching Tips, Techniques, and my Writing Worksheet (filled with humorous and thoughtful writing prompts) to inspire student writers—even reluctant writers!
(This lesson was designed for 8 - 12-year-olds. There is content here to teach for 90 minutes. You can edit to fit your class length as needed.)
