Fearless Dragon Writers' "Diary of a Wimpy Kid: Hard Luck"/Jeff Kinney Writing Worksheet (with 3 Themed Activity Sheets)

$5.00

Children LOVE Jeff Kinney's "Diary of a Wimpy Kid" series (especially 8 - 12-year-olds) for its relatable stories, comic strip drawings, and humor. Meeting children on their terms, on ground they are comfortable with, can help inspire writing. Teachers and parents can use this series to teach writing--as these books are great examples of Realistic Fiction. Realistic Fiction, although made-up, could actually happen. (Some events, people, and places may even be real.) As such, Realistic Fiction is an accessible way to launch children into writing!

This is a Fearless Dragon Writers' Writing Worksheet for the book: "Diary of a Wimpy Kid: Hard Luck" by author Jeff Kinney. Also included here are three FUN Activity Sheets (themed to pair with this book): 1) My "Magic 8 Ball" Comic Strip Storyboard; 2) My "As Seen on TV" Activity Sheet; and 3) My "Dear Diary" Activity Sheet.

These materials were designed for 8 - 12-year-olds, including reluctant writers, and are at the heart of my Realistic Fiction/ "Diary of a Wimpy Kid: Hard Luck" Writing Lesson. (These materials are also included in my FULL LESSON PLAN--plus much more content in the FULL LESSON PLAN as this is just a "taste" of a Fearless Dragon Writers' lesson.)

After reading two excerpts from "Diary of a Wimpy Kid: Hard Luck," (the excerpts I read are the "Magic 8 Ball" and "The Body Blankie" [a fictional "As Seen on TV" product] sections and are described in this materials packet). Then discuss Realistic Fiction (use your own materials or purchase my FULL LESSON PLAN*--FULLY SCRIPTED with enough content to teach for 90 minutes, for the way I teach Realistic Fiction). Distribute this Printable Writing Worksheet and the Activity Sheets. Have your students select their favorite Writing Choice from the Worksheet (no dry prompts!), allowing them at least twenty minutes to write their Realistic Fiction stories.

ACTIVITY SHEETS: If they like, they can use the Magic 8 Ball Storyboard Activity Sheet to draw/write a Magic 8 ball-themed story! (This Activity Sheet was designed to go with Writing Choice # 2 of the WRITING WORKSHEET.) Or, if they prefer, they can use the "As Seen on TV" Activity Sheet to create a product, a story, and/or an infomercial script! As a BONUS there is also a "Dear Diary" Activity Sheet for students to explore crafting their own diary entries.

Sharing time is next, with students reading aloud from their stories and sharing any drawings they may have created. Fun!
