Fearless Dragon Writers' "Three Times Lucky"/Sheila Turnage--Writing Worksheets (and One Activity Sheet)
Looking for materials to help teach SETTINGS and DIALOGUE in writing? Well, today's your lucky day! These Fearless Dragon Writers' materials tie into the fantastic middle-grade mystery novel, "Three Times Lucky" by Sheila Turnage. (It's also a Newbery Medal Honor book.) These materials provide a way to help students create realistic SETTINGS and DIALOGUE. This Materials Packet contains TWO Fearless Dragon Writers' WRITING WORKSHEETS for the book: "Three Times Lucky" by author Sheila Turnage. ) Also included is a THEMED "Message in a Bottle" ACTIVITY SHEET to pair with this book to teach TWO mentor-text writing lessons--one on SETTINGS and one on DIALOGUE! (Target audience for my materials: 8 - 13-year-olds.)
These materials are at the heart of my Sheila Turnage/"Three Times Lucky" FULL LESSON PLAN for this fun children's book. You can use these materials in a number of ways, but the way I like to use these materials is.... I start with a READ ALOUD EXCERPT.... READ ALOUD from "Three Times Lucky" (by Sheila Turnage) by reading pages 1 - 6.
* Then TEACH a lesson on SETTINGS OR DIALOGUE. You can make it easy on yourself and use my FULL LESSON PLAN (available here), if you like. It is FULLY SCRIPTED and contains enough material for 1.5 hours of teaching. (Trim it as you see fit. It also contains BONUS CONTENT and a good deal of material on this book's author!)
*Then DISTRIBUTE and READ ALOUD these Printable WRITING WORKSHEETS and the THEMED-ACTIVITY SHEET. (Use one Worksheet at a time for maximum effect.) Have your students select their favorite Writing Choice from the Writing Worksheets! As for the Activity Sheet, it can be used pre-writing or post-writing. Fun!
*Allow at least 20 minutes of student WRITING TIME. Then allow at least 20 minutes for SHARING TIME as the children read their work aloud in a supportive environment.
