Jeff Kinney's "Diary of a Wimpy Kid" -- Realistic Fiction Lesson Plan
In this Fearless Dragon Writers, LLC Lesson Plan (created by writer and writing teacher Andrea Felcone) you will find a FULLY SCRIPTED lesson plan to teach a REALISTIC FICTION writing lesson based on Jeff Kinney's "Diary of a Wimpy Kid: Hard Luck" (Book 8 of the series).
It may seem like an unconventional choice to use a "Diary of a Wimpy Kid" book as a mentor-text, but children LOVE this series (especially 8 - 12-year-olds) and why not take something they love and merge it with something you want them to love? (Writing!) This series is a great example of Realistic Fiction. Realistic Fiction, although made-up, could actually happen. (Some events, people, and places may even be real.) As such, Realistic Fiction is an accessible way to launch children into writing. Partner this Writing Concept with this extremely popular series--filled with relatable situations, humor, and comic-strip drawings--and you have a very fun writing lesson that educates as it entertains. (There's even an opportunity to ramp up the fun by using a Magic 8 ball to tie-in thematically with this book!)
Will this be a successful writing lesson for your students? "Signs point to YES!"
This lesson plan contains—21 pages of tested content—including Teaching Tips, Techniques, and a Fearless Dragon Writers' Writing Worksheet (filled with humorous and thoughtful prompts) to inspire writers—even reluctant writers! Writing Concepts covered: Realistic Fiction.
(This lesson was designed for 8 - 12-year-olds. There is content here to teach for 90 minutes. You can edit to fit your class length as needed.)
